Tips for Making Your Quad Cities Family Photos a Success

Family Photos!

If you’re planning your next family photos in the Quad Cities, you already know getting everyone dressed, smiling, and looking the same direction can feel like a small miracle. As a family photographer, I’ve learned a few tricks to help make your session feel less stressful — and a lot more fun.

1. Coordinate — Don’t Match

Gone are the days of identical white shirts and jeans. Choose colors that complement each other instead of matching exactly. Think soft neutrals, earthy tones, or colors that work well together. Bonus tip: layering looks amazing in photos — cardigans, jackets, and scarves add texture and depth.

2. Let the Kids Be Kids

Some of the best family photos happen when you loosen the reins a bit. Let the kids run, laugh, explore, and show their personalities. A little extra freedom (and patience) goes a long way toward authentic smiles and genuine moments you’ll actually want on your wall.

3. Stay Relaxed and Go With the Flow

It’s easy to stress over every detail, but remember — your family photos should capture you as you are right now. Take a deep breath, let go of perfection, and trust that the magic happens in the real moments between the poses.

4. Bring Snacks (Trust Me on This One)

If you’ve got little ones, snacks are your best friend. A quick snack break can turn things around fast and keep everyone happy. Choose clean snacks (no sticky fingers!) — small crackers, fruit snacks, or mini marshmallows work great for quick boosts and bribery that photographs well.

5. Focus on Connection

The best family photos aren’t just about smiling at the camera — they’re about showing your love and connection. Stand close, lean in, wrap your arms around each other, or let your hands naturally intertwine. Those little gestures make your photos look warm, genuine, and full of heart.
