5 Reasons In-Home Lifestyle Family Sessions are So Amazing!

Most of you have probably had family photos taken at one time or another. You know the drill. Find a beautiful location (probably during the fall) and find time in your busy fall schedule to set aside for some photos. Now don’t get me wrong, I LOVE fall family photos! But I also live in the midwest, and sometimes there is barely a fall season at all! Well, what about summer photos? Those are amazing too! But if you have little ones, you know that with the long days comes late sunsets, and the best time for outdoor family photos is that golden our right before the sunsets. So what to do instead? Consider having your family photos taken in your own home! Here are some reasons why I absolutely love in-home Lifestyle family sessions.

  1. It’s where you spend most of your time. I know that seems obvious, but it’s true. Much of my favorite time with my kids is sitting at home together reading books, making pancakes on weekend mornings, or playing family games. But how often do we get images that capture these favorite moments? Having your session in your home allows you to do some of these same things and capture real, true, interaction and memories of your family doing what they love to do anyway! Added bonus, the photos will look great hung in your home!

  1. It’s great for children and newborns. In-home sessions lend themselves well to families with smaller children. Kids love being at home and interacting with their parents, showing off their rooms, etc. This also works really well if you’v recently added a new addition to your family. Show off the nursery, and get some great snuggles and cuddles in the comfort of your own home. Part of your session should include getting some shots of details like how small your baby’s hands are in yours or the cute decorations you put up in the nursery, all of which make for great items in a baby book or wall decor after the session!

  1. It’s great for couples. Maybe you’re newly engaged, or just moved in together, or maybe you just bought a new house together! Why not take some intimate, sweet, photos in your place together to commemorate this time in your life and decorate the walls with while you’re at it? An in-home couples shoot is a great way to spend some time together and get some amazing images in the process.

  1. Timing of the shoot. Any photographer will tell you that if you’re shooting outdoors, the best time to shoot is either the hour after sunrise or the hour before sunset. This is the time when the light is the best and the photos have that amazing sunset glow to them! However, when the photos are taken in your home, the available timing options open up considerably! The only requirement is having a few rooms that get some nice natural light. This means shoots can take place mid-morning to mid-afternoon, which can be especially great if you’ve got younger children who might not do well staying up super late for an evening photo session.

  1. It can be done during any season. While most family photos are done during the fall for the beautiful colors, many families tend to have more downtime during the winter months when it’s cold outside. This is a great time to get everyone together for an in-home shoot. In-home lifestyle family sessions are great for any time of year since the weather isn’t a factor.
